Prabal Gurung's exploration of impermanence during New York Fashion Week

Does a butterfly realise that it previously was a caterpillar? How can we fill the little intervals between the start and finish, delight and despair?
This season, Prabal Gurung was contemplating a lot. For a fashion week show Friday highlighting the Buddhist notion of "anichya," or impermanence, he constructed a mirrored square runway mirroring an extravagant blue light display at the New York Public Library's main branch.
Gurung was inspired by his own Nepal, which he hasn't gone since before the pandemic, to use butterfly motifs on wool jackets and use colours like vermilion, saffron, burgundy, and dusty pink. A recent 10-day meditation retreat inspired him to "mute everything," according to him.
Finding hope "in the dark areas," as he put it, was part of the concept. "After the darkness, there is light."
This time, his silhouettes were longer and more acute. He put harmony to the test with his asymmetry. While delicately draping, he also offered distinct angles. There were wool coats, glistening golds, and gems, as well as flowing, gliding skirts.
Everything developed out of the solitude he experienced during his 10-day vipassana retreat, during which reading, talking on the phone, and physical activity were all outlawed. On the third day, a painted lady butterfly "gave me something to think" as it landed on his window.
Gurung claimed that because he had grown up with "impermanence," he wanted to embrace the idea that while nothing is permanent, perpetual change need not be feared. He remarked that they should embrace, and he is dressed appropriately for the occasion.
One of his front row visitors was Kelsea Ballerini, who dazzled at the Grammys in a yellow gown by Gurung. Becky G and Alyah Chanelle Scott were with her.
